what you need to know about peripheral artery disease

    Additional Information

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) indicates diseases of the blood vessels located outside the heart and brain.

They are often caused by an escalation and accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries. This disease affects the blood vessels causing them to narrow, therefore limiting or restricting the blood flow to the arms, kidneys, stomach, and most commonly, the legs.

Peripheral artery disease is a vital risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Men are slightly more likely than women to develop PAD. Peripheral vascular disease is also more common in smokers.

What are the symptoms of peripheral arterial disease?

PAD can build up over a lifetime, and the symptoms may not become obvious until later in life. For many people, the outward symptoms will not appear until the artery has narrowed by 60 percent or more.

Symptoms of advanced PAD may include:

    • A burning or aching pain in the feet and toes while resting, especially at night while lying flat
    • Cool skin in the feet
    • Redness or other color changes of the skin
    • Increased occurrence of infection
    • Toe and foot sores that do not heal

Many people with PAD do not have any symptoms.

    Treatment of PAD

Depending on the severity of the peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and diagnostic testing results as determined by us. Treatment of PAD can reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life, reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke, and prevent further complications. Without timely intervention, PAD may worsen and can become life threatening if left untreated. Meet with us to know what are the best options for you.
